British MPs want bigger pensions
Just when the rest of the electorate are becoming
increasingly worried about the occupational pensions they will receive when they
stop working, MPs are about to award themselves a 20% increase to their own
pensions. The extra money will come from taxpayers and will give MPs some of the
most generous pensions in Europe.
MPs are justifying the increases on the grounds of increased job insecurity.
Apparently the average length of service has fallen to 10 years. MPs claim that
they leave well-paid jobs to become members of parliament. Once they are back on
the job market they cannot get back to the same level of salaries they
previously enjoyed. Wise Owls says "Welcome to the real world!"
Some MPs are worried about the timing of the move but not so embarrassed that
they are likely to vote against it. You may remember they also voted themselves
a £4000 salary increase just after the last election.
